Water Damage SERVPRO Releases Report for Homeowners to Avoid Paso Robles Water Damage Water Damage

Professional water damage experts, SERVPRO, this week outline the four most common causes of water damage and how to avoid or prevent water damage to one’s home.

Paso Robles, CA —The cleanup and restoration specialists at SERVPRO have released a recent report detailing the four most common causes of Paso Robles water damage and how to avoid this type of scenario. Homeowners can avoid excessive water damage by following prevention tips listed in the report.

To view the report, click here (link), or see below:

4 Most Common Causes of Water Damage in the Home

Water damage can have a serious effect on a house, including rendering it a total loss in extreme cases. Below are the four most common causes of water damage and tips for avoiding damage to one’s home.

Bursting or Leaking Pipes

This is one of the most common causes of home flooding and can lead to excessive water damage. Drains which become backed up with debris can block and cause pressure in the pipe, leading to a burst or leak. Incorrectly operating garbage disposals are another culprit of bursting pipes. Additionally, roots growing in the yard can move into sewer lines causing issues with piping and plumbing.

Tip: Ensure regular maintenance of garbage disposal units and avoid putting excessive amounts of food or waste down the drain.

Issues with plumbing

Hoses and pipe joints which aren’t fully attached to plumbing fixtures can cause flooding in the home. Flooding can happen rapidly in a situation like this, leading to water damage and potential mold in the affected area.

Tip: Periodically check under bathroom and kitchen sinks for worn out hoses and pipe joints.

Moisture buildup

Areas prone to collecting water, such as crawl spaces, attics and basements can be more susceptible to water damage if water has been introduced and never removed. Moisture can leak through concrete foundation causing water and mold damage to lower levels of the home. Air leakage into the section between the home and the attic can cause moisture on the underside of the roof and lead to rotting and mold.

Tip: Periodically check for air leaks or moisture build-up in mold-prone areas, including the basement and attic.

Malfunctioning Household Appliances

When appliances age, their pipes and hoses deteriorate causing cracks and rust to form leaving them weak and susceptible to bursting. Household appliances which can cause the most water damage include washing machines, water heaters, refrigerators and dishwashers.

Tip: Ensure regular maintenance of household appliances and replace any old or worn out hosing and tubing.

Following these suggestions can save homeowners time, money and stress. The professionals at SERVPRO regularly repair and restore Paso Robles water damage and are available 24/7 to lend a helping hand.

Atascadero SERVPRO Water Damage And Fire Damage Restoration Specialists Release Report On Reducing Fire Risk

10/12/2016 (Permalink)

Water Damage Atascadero SERVPRO Water Damage And Fire Damage Restoration Specialists Release Report On Reducing Fire Risk Fire and Water Damage

SERVPRO Atascadero water damage and fire damage restoration specialists have released a report this week on how to reduce the risk of fire as summer approaches.

As temperatures rise, especially in dry, warm climates such as Atascadero, fire risk increases as well. Entire communities need to work together, especially those in fire-dependent ecosystems, creating fire-wise solutions that will help to prevent fires from happening, and to ensure that when they do, that fire fighters can effectively extinguish them.

“For those of us that live in fire-dependent habitats such as Atascadero, it’s not if a fire will occur, it’s when,” said Atascadero SERVPRO owner Joe Powers.

Follow these tips to help reduce the risk of fire, and when fire does occur, that it is possible for firefighters effectively combat them.

Check smoke detectors

Working smoke detectors can save lives. What may start as a small kitchen fire can quickly spread. Make sure to keep smoke detectors fully charged and operational.

Have an EDITH

EDITH stands for: Exit drills in the home. Cal Fire suggests sketching a floor plan of the home, and then creating an escape plan with arrows that map out the primary and secondary escape routes. Then, have a drill and test out the routes.

Create a firebreak around your home

A firebreak is a gap in vegetation that will stop or slow the spread of a wildfire. Having flammable vegetation directly surrounding a home will make it extremely difficult for fire fighters to save it.

The Atascadero Fire Chief Kurt Stone released the following standards for clearance requirements of vegetative growth:

  1. a) Maximum height of 4 inches
    b) Located within 100 feet of any building or structure, or to the property line, whichever is nearer
    c) Located within 50 feet from the edge of any improved roadway
    d) Located within 50 feet from each property line
    e) Located within 10 feet on each side of driveways

Firewise landscaping

Replacing plants that are prone to fire with plants that are more fire resistant can dramatically reduce the risk of fire around a home. Some fantastic fire resistant plant options include: all species of iceplant, wild strawberry, carnations, and all succulents. In general, look for moist, supple leaves, and plants with little sap production. Keep in mind that fire resistant plants can still ignite, but they can reduce the risk of fire and make it easier for firefighters to access the home during the event of a fire.

SERVPRO Atascadero water damage specialists release report on the dangers of black mold

Water Damage SERVPRO Atascadero water damage specialists release report on the dangers of black mold Water Damage

ATASCADERO, Ca. — Black mold is a common household danger that many will at some point encounter, but there are many common misconceptions held about black mold and its toxicity. Today, Atascadero water damage restoration and mold restoration specialists SERVPRO released a report further examining the dangers if this common household problem.

What is black mold?

Stachybotyrs chartarum, more commonly known as black mold, is a toxic fungus that can cause several types of problems when the spores are inhaled. Neurological, respiratory, circulatory, reproductive, and many other problems are not uncommon symptoms.

Neurological symptoms of black mold inhalation

Black mold can kill neurons in the brain and impair a person’s mental ability, causing a variety of mental and neurological problems, including:

  • Hallucinations
  • Brain fog
  • Shock
  • Disorientation
  • Aggression
  • Memory loss
  • Seizures

Less severe symptoms consist of anxiety, dizziness, shaking, shortened attention span, and delayed reflexes.

Respiratory symptoms of black mold inhalation

Since black mold is a fungus, it is the toxic spores and mycotoxins that do a majority of the damage to the body, generally when they are inhaled. As a result, black mold takes a heavy toll on the respiratory system. Pulmonary hemorrhaging (bleeding of the lungs), bleeding gums, difficulty breathing/shortness of breath, swollen lungs, and nosebleeds are all notable symptoms of trichothecene mycotoxins that are lodged in the mucus membranes.

Circulatory symptoms of black mold inhalation

Black mold can be inhaled, ingested, or absorbed into the skin or eyes and can eventually enter the blood stream leading to problems with blood clotting, heart damage, hemorrhaging, vomiting blood, and heart inflammation amongst other problems.

What can you do in the event of black mold exposure?

The first step would be to identify symptoms of mold poisoning, as listed above. Anyone who is experiencing mold poisoning should see a physician to inspect for allergic reactions or a lung infection. The black mold must be removed from your home to make a full recovery.

General SERVPRO® Pledges Ongoing Support to the American Red Cross Disaster American Red Cross

Responder Program

Red Cross recognizes SERVPRO for their contribution to disaster

preparedness and recovery efforts.

Atascadero, CA (Grassroots Newswire) June 1, 2016 -- The American Red Cross recently recognized SERVPRO®, a cleanup and restoration company, for participation in its Disaster Responder Program1.  As a Disaster Responder Program member, SERVPRO pledges a donation to the Red Cross in advance of disasters, allowing the organization to respond quickly and effectively to nearly 66,000 disasters annually, most of which are home fires. SERVPRO is entering their third year of partnership with the Red Cross; their donations to the organization to date exceed one million dollars.

According to statistics cited by the Red Cross, seven people die in a home fire each day in the U.S. Aiming to reduce deaths and injuries caused by home fires by 25 percent by the end of 2019, the Red Cross launched a Home Fire Campaign in October of 2014. The support of SERVPRO and other Disaster Responder Program members allows the Red Cross to pursue their home fire prevention goals while they continue to provide critical services to disaster victims.

One of the reasons home fires account for the majority of the disasters the Red Cross responds to annually is that the risk for home fires exists all year long, said Joseph Powers, owner of SERVPRO of San Luis Obispo. Statistics compiled by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)2 show the majority of home fires are related to unattended cooking accidents and cooking is something most people do every day.

Although SERVPRO's business is helping business and home owners recover from fire, flood and other disasters, the company and its franchisees actively support disaster preparedness education, including fire prevention efforts. When disaster does strike, their relationships with major insurance companies combined with industry-leading job-management technology help smooth the path to rebuilding and restoration for home and business owners affected by the unexpected.

SERVPRO's commitment to the Red Cross Disaster Responder Program means that, when disaster strikes, homeowners can count on the Red Cross to address their immediate needs and supply essential services, said Powers.

Once the immediate emergency is under control, homeowners can count on the expertise of restoration specialists at SERVPRO of San Luis Obispo to help them restore their property and move forward with their lives.

Atascadero Fire Damage Specialists issue report on fire and how it spreads

Fire Damage Atascadero Fire Damage Specialists issue report on fire and how it spreads Fire damage

ATASCADERO, Ca. – Fire is a common element that is credited with being the most utilized in today’s society. It’s used for a multitude of things, baking, lighting, cooking, ceremonies, the list goes on and on. But what exactly is fire?

Most know it as that orange, hot wispy thing that is used to light cigarettes or cook food on a stove. But often times, fire can be the disaster waiting to turn a beloved household into a smoldering pile of ash. To fully understand how to prevent it from spreading, you have to know what it is and what feeds it. Today, Atascadero Fire Damage Specialists at SERVPRO have issued a report on what fire is, how it spreads, and how to prevent it from making a tragedy of a treasured home.

What is fire?

Fire is a chemical process requiring three essential factors: Oxygen, fuel, and an ignition source. Without these three components, a fire cannot start or will immediately extinguish. When a fire burns, a process called oxidation occurs, wherein oxygen atoms combine with carbon and hydrogen to form carbon dioxide and water; heat and energy is released very quickly. The rate of oxidation is particularly fast with paper and wood, and when heat can’t be released faster than it occurs it creates the phenomena known as fire.

How does it spread?

Once started, a fire is likely to spread until all fuel feeding it has been used to the point of extinction. This could mean devastation for a beloved home or business property. However, understanding the many fuels can assist in preventing the spreading.

Chemicals and combustibles – Lab chemicals, household cleaners, paint, and other such chemicals all cause fire to burn hotter and more aggressively. Common household combustibles include mattresses, newspapers, and various fabrics.

Closed space – Closed spaces will burn up much faster than open space. It will trap the flames and only result in further smoke damage, not to mention creating a tough time for fire fighters trying to eliminate the flame.

Ventilation – Buildings with central heating or air conditioning have ductwork which creates a pathway for smoke and flames to travel between floors.

Water – In some cases, such as grease fires, water will not extinguish the fire, but will actually help spread it. In this case, a special fire extinguisher or baking soda is best to put out the flame.

Homeowners Take Note! Holiday Fire Risk Increases After Christmas Day

Local SERVPRO® restoration specialist cautions Atascadero homeowners
to take common sense precautions throughout the holiday season Atascadero, CA (Grassroots Newswire) December 3, 2014 -- Most homeowners are aware holiday decorations should be used with care. Each year, statistics tell the story of the fire danger resulting from frayed wires, proximity to heat sources, and lights left on unattended. But Joseph Powers of SERVPRO of Atascadero wants local homeowners to know that the danger of fire caused by holiday decorating, and by Christmas
trees specifically, actually increases after the holiday. Citing research from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)*, Powers says while four out of five Christmas tree fires happen in December and January, the 10 days with the highest average number of fires were all after Christmas Day.

“For many families, preparing for the holiday season is a very busy time,” said Powers. “Come December 26, it’s tempting to relax and stop watering the Christmas tree, replacing bulbs in outdoor lights and tucking indoor garlands back into place. Dry greens, open sockets and decorations that slip dangerously close to light sockets or fireplaces can all increase the risk of fire in the days after the Christmas holiday.”

The American Christmas Tree Association** quotes Nielsen research that says Americans purchased 21.6 million live Christmas trees in 2011. That number is significant because, according to the NFPA, Christmas trees remain the number one culprit in holiday fires. Forty-three percent of Christmas tree fires happen in December, but January is close behind, claiming 39 percent—numbers that demonstrate the danger of allowing Christmas trees to dry out during and after the holiday season. Tragically, Christmas tree fires are particularly deadly, claiming on average one life in every 40 fires compared to an average of one death per 142 total reported home fires.

Powers encourages Atascadero homeowners who choose to decorate with live Christmas trees to be diligent about watering their trees both before and after the holidays. “When a Christmas tree dries out, it takes only a single spark from the fireplace, a draft that blows a candle flame too near, or a carelessly held cigarette to turn your holiday celebration into a tragedy,” says Powers. “Beyond the damage from the fire itself, a Christmas tree fire, like any fire, can result in extensive smoke and water damage throughout your home, and can even be deadly.”

As the holiday season moves into full swing, Powers reminds homeowners to take common sense precautions based on a clear understanding of the potential danger to help prevent holiday traditions from turning into a holiday nightmare. Water Damage Property Restoration Can Be a Messy Business Property damage caused by water

Local disaster recovery specialist offers insight into the complexities of dealing with disaster and water damage in Atascadero.

When disaster strikes, property owners need to make a lot of decisions quickly and under pressure. Effective disaster remediation involves a lot of moving parts: remediation specialists, insurance companies, local codes, state codes, documentation and more—and all of this has to happen in an atmosphere charged with emotion and stress.

Joseph Powers of SERVPRO of Atascadero Obispo says, “Efficiency is key when you are dealing with disaster remediation; it saves our customers money and it makes our work more effective. SERVPRO is an industry leader in work efficiency technology—continually innovating to help both our customers and our business control costs.”

SERVPRO’s proprietary DryBook™ tool is one example of the company’s focus on efficiency and cost control. Remediation projects must be managed to both industry and insurance company standards, and Joseph says that tools like DryBook™ help SERVPRO Franchise technicians track and document progress on restoration, cleanup and repair services. “The DryBook™ tool helps us deliver on every detail of every water damage job, every time,” says Powers.

To help avoid regulatory headaches and paperwork pitfalls, Powers suggests property owners consider the following criteria when choosing a remediation company to deal with the aftermath of a disaster.

Industry standards: Does your remediation company deliver a product that meets the standards set by

  • The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC)?
  • Most major insurance companies, including cycle times and deadline requirements?

Recordkeeping: Does your remediation company have a system in place to ensure accurate, complete and convenient benchmarking of each step of the remediation process, including

  • Capturing and updating data, including job diary notes, electronically and real-time on the jobsite, with simultaneous updates saved at the central office?
  • Using e-signatures to help eliminate lost paperwork and the need to scan documents?
  • Providing a complete record of the damage and remediation efforts in images, with descriptions, start-to-finish?

Equipment selection: Does your contractor have the ability, on-the-spot, to

  • Identify the right equipment for the job, based on the damage description?
  • Validate the use of each piece of equipment, automatically, as part of the remediation records?

SERVPRO Franchise Professionals specialize in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it “Like it never even happened,” for both commercial and residential customers.
